Information Technology industry is moving toward utilizing more open, interactive, and collaborate environments than proprietary, tightly-coupled, and competitive business models.

IT solutions are evolving from creating applications to constructing systems, providing platforms, and recently to offering open markets. Business are free (more freely, at least) to go to the markets to pick and choose whatever they prefer to use and be able to have them all work together.

This is a real paradigm shift for those software providers. In the past, software companies have been trying to develop solutions to integrate software both horizontally and vertically. And they use this model to bind and expand their business. In the meantime, provide more top-to-bottom services to their client. The DevOps wave has encouraged smaller teams providing more rapidly iterated services while enjoying the benefit of integration among those micro services.

Nowadays, you can develop different applications in different programming languages in different editors on different platforms for different target OS. Microsoft’s Azure DevOps is trying to provide the open yet integrated market place for code repos, build tools, release pipelines, test automation, work tracking, business intelligence, and library management. It is still not a complete list to deliver business value. But the capability to interact and collaborate with other tools give us a good foundation to build upon.
